Dr. Muhammad Ayub is a Professorial Research Fellow at University College London(UCL). Before joining UCL, he was a professor of Psychiatry at Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada and is a clinician-scientist. Dr. Ayub started his career as a psychiatrist in Lahore, Pakistan. He came across many families with multiple individuals affected with intellectual disability. This spiked his interest in genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders in consanguineous populations. He has collected over 500 such families and have discovered many genetic mutations associated with the disease.

His research interests cut across the biological and psychosocial aspects of psychiatry. He leads a team of researchers in Pakistan studying the genetics of intellectual disability, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism. His research is funded by the National Institute of Health (US) and the Canadian Institute of Health Research (Canada).
